Testimonies from Guiding Star Mothers
"My name is Nicole. I came to Guiding Star when I was pregnant and had a 6 year old daughter named Aaliya. I was homeless and didn't know where to go or what direction to take. My last resource was a shelter that I had heard many bad stories about. Luckily, I found out about Guiding Star Ministries and called them instead. When they had an opening, I was chosen to live there. That was the best thing that happened to me. Finally, I would have peace and stability for my children. I enrolled my daughter in school and I had my son, Meki, while at Guiding Star. Ms. Tina, the director, was there holding my hand the whole time. My son calls her "Nana" and the love between the two of them is genuine. I found daycare and was able to pursue my nursing career. I am currently working doing home healthcare, my children are doing well in school and I love my new home. Thank you Guiding Star for leading me on a new path."
"When I first came to Guiding Star, I was nervous and scared because it was the first time I was on my own. I was pregnant and had a one year old son. Life was confusing and desperate, and at that time, nothing looked promising. Ms. Tina accepted me into the program and said that if I followed the rules of Guiding Star, I would have the opportunity to make a change. At Guiding Star, I had a bouncing, healthy baby girl. I went to school to become a CAN, applied for housing and received it through 'Dignity Housing.' I am happy and have a brighter future because Guiding Star gave me a chance. I thank God for Guiding Star Ministries."
"My name is Julienne and I am still a resident at Guiding Star. Before I came here, I was 18 years old with a one year old daughter and I was pregnant, scared, and didn't know what to do. I felt like my life was over. I was homeless with two kids and thought, 'How am I going to make it?' I was going from place to place, sleeping on sofas and floors. I found out about Guiding Star and called. They gave me an interview, I was accepted, and from that point on, my future got brighter. With the life skills I am learning and the parenting classes I attend, I am learning how to be a mom to two. I just got my CAN certificate and am presently looking for work. Being here has taught me to be responsible, caring, and patient with people and my children."
"My name is Sharon and I am a twenty-one year old mother of three girls. My daughters are ages seven, three, and one. We spent almost the last two years of our lives in the safety and comfort of Guiding Star. Their parenting classes showed me how to love and bond with the my children and how to be a better mom. The staff and volunteers steered me in the right direction and taught me how to be independent. I now have a full time job, a savings and checking account, and my girls and I have our own three bedroom house in a nice neighborhood. With God, all things are possible. Thanks Guiding Star!"
